Georgia from Greece in Mexico

Attention fellow food and culture lovers: Tuesday, I am teaching a class about Greece. Sign up soon! https://sis.meridiantech.edu/get_ce_CRSMemo.cfm?sid=2506062794659300&sy=202425&sem=2&EM=1

Mmmm ... We will make chicken souvllaki with tzatzki, delicious sides, and baklava for dessert.

My classes are more than just learning recipes. Our world is simultaneously so vast and also so small. In a time when we are often divided, it's important to learn and celebrate other cultures. These classes encompass history, music, and art all from the lens of a delicious meal. Now, let's talk about the people of Greece. Picture this: warm, welcoming smiles, hearty handshakes, and a sense of hospitality that makes you feel like family, even if you’ve just met. Greeks are the masters of “philoxenia,” or “friend to a stranger.” Whether you’re a long-lost cousin or a new friend, you’ll be greeted with open arms and, most likely, a plate of something irresistibly delicious. In my twenties I worked in the hospitality industry and traveled often for conferences. At one conference in Mexico, I met Georgia, an exuberant woman from Greece. She was warm, kind, and funny. She absolutely made me feel like I was a part of her family, and we kept in touch for years. She was constantly offering me food and trying to match make (I was single). At one point she tried to marry me off to a Volkswagen engineer from Germany. If she were an ambassador of Greece, she certainly made everyone want to experience it.

Sign up soon, and get ready to immerse yourself in a culture where every meal is a celebration, and every celebration is a feast! Opa!

PS here's a recipe sneak peak!
